Dr. Scullin is a materials entrepreneur who has pioneered several new materials into commercialization. He is currently CEO at MycoWorks, the leader in the field of fine mycelium materials (Reishi™). He is also the co-founder and board member of a stealth-mode materials company. In 2008, Dr. Scullin founded Alphabet Energy, the leader in the field of thermoelectric products for waste-heat recovery, and sold that company in 2019. Prior to founding Alphabet Energy Inc., Dr. Scullin held positions at X/Seed Capital, IBM, and General Motors. He has won numerous awards for innovation and entrepreneurship including the World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer award and was named to Forbes 30 Under 30.

One Tree Planted with Diana Chaplin

Diana Chaplin is the Canopy Director of One Tree Planted, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Her role is focused on managing communications, marketing, and storytelling around the many reforestation projects that the organization conducts. She’s a holistic thinker who applies the wisdom of nature’s systems towards creating connectivity through content that ultimately helps scale the impact of One Tree Planted’s work. She has a background in publishing, leadership development, and wellness, all of which fused beautifully in service of sustainability.

The Last of Us 2 — The Mycology of Cordyceps

In this episode we discuss the celebrity zombie fungus, Ophiocordyceps unilateralis. Its latest trending appearance being The Last of Us Part II— an apocalyptic video game where this fungus has evolved to infect human beings. This was produced by the Naughty Dog for PlayStation.

We go over the mycology of this fungus and debate the likelihood of cordyceps evolving to infect homo sapiens.

Twelve Year Old Te’Lario’s Amazing Mushroom Farm

 

In this special episode, we welcome the young entrepreneur and mushroom enthusiast, Te’Lario Watkins II. Te’Lario launched his mushroom business, Tiger Mushroom Farms, when he was just seven years old, and is on a mission to help end hunger and encourage kids to eat healthier. He was featured on the Steve Harvey Show and just received a Global Child Prodigy Award! Te’Lario’s passion for community, mushrooms, and business come together as an extraordinary force helping the world become a better place.

Te’Lario Watkins II is a 12 year old mushroom farmer, author, speaker and Hunger Hero. Te’Lario started his mushroom farm when he was 7 years old, and sells his mushrooms at local farmers markets and restaurants. Also an author his book is titled “Te’Lario’s Amazing Mushroom Farm”, he shares his story with schools and other local organizations. One of Te’Lario’s missions is to end hunger. He founded his nonprofit “The Garden Club Project” to help end hunger and encourage kids to eat healthier.

Growing Mushrooms In Ecuador with Lexie Gropper

In this episode, we talk about the abandoned oil pits from Texaco (now Chevron) and its impact on the environment and communities, and the Amisacho Restauración project that was founded in response to it. We discuss growing mushrooms in Ecuador and how she is using her mycological knowledge to help restore health, community, and ecosystems in the area.

Lexie Gropper is a dear friend and ecological warrior based in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Lexie Gropper is a biologist dedicated to deepening her understanding of the life cycles, with a passion for the processes of decomposition leading to regrowth. She dedicates her energy to the cultivation of plants, fungi, bacteria, relationships, community, and healing.

Lexie has been living in the Ecuadorian Amazon for the past 6 years. She lives on her family’s reforested jungle and food forest island in the middle of a sea of deforestation and ongoing contamination from petroleum extraction, cattle ranching, and cash crop monocultures. The name of their project is Amisacho Restauración, where they’ve dedicated themselves to three direct lines of action in their region: restoring ecosystems, restoring health, restoring community.

In this episode, we are joined by the brilliant author and scientist Merlin Sheldrake. Merlin discusses his work with fungi throughout the years and how he has learned to understand them via many instruments and thought experiments. We talk a lot about his recent book, ‘Entangled Life’ where Merlin presents fungi to the reader in contexts of biology, ecology, philosophy, and more.

Merlin Sheldrake is a biologist and a writer with a background in plant sciences, microbiology, ecology, and the history and philosophy of science. He received a Ph.D. in tropical ecology from Cambridge University for his work on underground fungal networks in tropical forests in Panama, where he was a predoctoral research fellow of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Merlin’s is a keen brewer and fermenter, and is fascinated by the relationships that arise between humans and more-than-human organisms. His first book, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds, and Shape Our Futures was published in North America in May 2020, and will be published in England in September.

Today’s show features our first guest from Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Albert Garcia-Romeu. We discuss the history of clinical research on psilocybin, its implications, and its bright future for healing. We also discuss the possibility of treating Alzheimer’s and dementia with psilocybin. Dr. Garcia-Romeu gives us an in-depth perspective on the execution of this important research, and hopefully inspires others to fuel its progression.

Dr. Albert Garcia-Romeu is a member of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a Guest Researcher at the National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program. His research examines the effects of psychedelics in humans, with a focus on psilocybin as an aid in the treatment of addiction. He received his doctorate in Psychology in 2012 from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, CA, where he studied self-transcendence and meditation, and their relationship to mental health. His current research interests include clinical applications of psychedelics, mindfulness, and altered states of consciousness and their underlying psychological mechanisms. He additionally studies real-world drug use patterns and impacts on public health, and the role of spirituality in mental health and addiction.

Today we are delighted to welcome Dr. Tom Volk— one of the most established mycologists in the United States. Tom talks about the academic myco-culture and how much it has changed over the years, as well as the capacities of studying mycology at an academic institution. He also shares his journey of getting a heart transplant, and how fungi have affected his health throughout his life. 

Dr. Tom Volk is a well known mycologist who received a PHD in botany with a minor in genetics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where he is currently teaching. Dr. Volk has mentored hundreds of students in the mycology field, has taught internationally and been a feature on TED talks.
