How to Increase Energy with Adaptogenic Herbal Supplements

The herbs and mushrooms listed below contain adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are a classification of medicinal plants that have a nonspecific effect on the immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. Herbal Energy Supplements: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic root used to increase resistance to stress, endurance, physical stamina and immunity. One study of elite cyclists found that those who took this herb were able to cycle 7% longer than those given a placebo (Shenoy, Shweta, et al). While building energy, Ashwagandha is also a sedative to the nerves, and is used to combat tiredness and lack of concentration. Ashwagandha is also used as a sexual tonic and aphrodisiac, often put in blends for fertility and hormone balancing. Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) 

In ancient times, people used Rhodiola for strength, endurance, to fend off colds and flus, and as an anti-fatigue and brain tonic. Rhodiola was kept a secret by the Russians during the Cold War, where it was tested for its potential to increase stamina, adaptation to stress and enhance overall performance of Russian soldiers and Olympic athletes. Later on, Rhodiola was brought to New York, where it was revered for its help with Lyme disease. Rhodiola is an herbal energy supplement used to boost physical endurance and enhance cognitive function, and to treat fatigue and exhaustion related to stress and sleep deprivation. 

Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Ginseng is known as the “root of immortality” to the Chinese, Koreans and Japanese. This herbal energy supplement is a general body strengthener. Ginseng is a stimulant, however, unlike caffeine, it gives you energy without taxing the adrenals. This root is used for its resistance to diseases, overall strengthening effects, combating fatigue/increasing energy, and enhancing overall athletic performance. Maca (Lepidium meyenii)

Maca is a root often used as a food as well as a medicine, as it adds nourishment and helps with overall strengthening. The powder goes well in smoothies and energy balls. Maca is known to boost energy, elevate mood, and strengthen resistance to diseases. Not only does Maca increase energy, it specifically increases sexual energy and has been used as an aphrodisiac. Schisandra (Schizandra chinensis)

Schisandra is a delicious five-flavored berry. Although not thought to be as powerfully adaptogenic as some of the other herbs mentioned, Schisandra is nutritive, known for enhancing the immune system, as well as the body’s resistance and adaptation to stressors. Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum

Reishi, known as the “mushroom of immortality,” has been used in traditional Chinese homes for centuries to promote life force (qi). Reishi is used to treat fatigue and enhance immunity through activating components like T-cells. Studies have shown Reishi’s effectiveness in preventing and/or healing degenerative diseases, heart disease and stroke, cancer, herpes, and bacterial infections. Reishi is also known to protect the liver and kidneys.
