Are mushrooms really medicinal?

Mushrooms are filled with compounds that are incredibly unique and beneficial to our health. They have been used for centuries as medicine all over the world, and continue to show up in modern medicine. In fact, many pharmaceutical drugs are derived from fungi— a testament to their medicinal aptitude. A couple examples would be Taxol, Krestin, Mevastatin

Penicillin, Ciclosporin, and so many others. While they have proven effective in pharmacopoeia, we at Mushroom Revival and so many others, believe that keeping medicine in its most natural form is best for a full spectrum holistic approach to medicine.

Many studies have shown fungal compounds to have effective adaptogenic, immunomodulating, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-allergic, hormonal balancing properties among many others. These compounds are mostly found in the form of triterpenes or beta-glucans.

You can read more about these compounds HERE or subscribe to our podcast or youtube channel!

What’s the difference between mycelium and fruiting bodies?

A common analogy to mushrooms vs mycelium is an apple vs an apple tree. The apple and the mushroom are for reproductive purposes and contain concentrated nutrients and life force. It is also the most available part of the organism– both in harvesting and digesting. In nature, attempting to harvest mycelium from the forest floor or from within a tree is not a feasible endeavour. And neither is making an apple pie out of apple tree branches. You would rather an apple pie be made out of apples right? That’s why we use 100% mushroom fruiting bodies (apples) in our products (pies). Even in cultivation, mycelium supplements are almost always accompanied by the grain it colonized. This means that up to 80% of the end product is grain powder or starch and is essentially very watered down. This would be like adding the branches and roots of an apple tree to a pie, and also up to 80% of the pie is also the soil the tree was growing in. Doesn’t sound very nutritious and delicious. Now imagine if these two pies were sold for the same price… which pie would you choose?

This does not mean that mycelium products aren’t doing good things for our body when digested, but rather it is weak compared to fruiting bodies.

Additionally, there are studies that highlight the stark difference in compounds present in mycelium versus mushrooms— usually showing that mushrooms are much higher in potency and chemical variety.

What does 100% fruiting body mean?

When we say 100% fruiting bodies, we mean just that! Mushroom supplements usually consist of mycelium on grain, mushrooms, or a combination of the two. At Mushroom Revival, we stick to only using mushrooms, the fruiting body.

Refer to the question above for the differences between mycelium and mushrooms.

Is there alcohol in your tinctures?

IYes, our alcohol extractions are present in the tincture and our finished products contain  30-40% alcohol. If you are seeking a product that is alcohol free, we suggest our mush 10 powder, or our dried cordyceps.

What is a double extracted tincture?

A double extraction means that the mushroom or herb has been extracted in two different, and usually equally important ways. Most mushrooms and herbs undergo a dual extraction of water, known as decoction, and alcohol, known as tincture. There are other solvents such as oil, glycerin, and vinegar. It’s important to select the appropriate solvents to get the most out of your herbal extraction, and each herb varies in its ideal methods and ratios.

For mushrooms, the beneficial compounds are primarily alcohol-soluble (triterpenes) and water-soluble (beta-glucans). So in order to get full spectrum benefits, it is necessary to do both. At Mushroom Revival, we go the extra mile to extract our mushrooms with alcohol and water, and then carefully combine the two to create a perfect balance and super potent product. Our mushrooms and herbs are also fine tuned to follow the science and extract them at the optimal alcohol percentages, temperatures, and durations.

Are there side-effects to taking medicinal mushrooms?

Medicinal mushrooms are generally regarded as safe, however if you have reason to be concerned over consuming medicinal mushroom products, please contact your health practitioner prior to taking supplements.

Common contraindications include blood thinners and insulin medications. If you are taking any medications, having surgery, dealing with other medical conditions, or pregnant, contact your doctor before incorporating our products into your regime.

How often should I take a mushroom tincture?

While there is no defined ‘dose’ of our tinctures, we suggest 1-3 dropper fulls (that’s one squeeze of the dropper) 1-3 times per day. You may choose to take more or less, or as needed! These supplements are a matter of personal preference on what you need on that given hour/day/week/month/year.

What is the best time to take these supplements?

The short answer is any day, any time! And again, when to take these supplements is a matter of personal preference. But some of our formulas and mushrooms are better suited for particular times. It’s always important to take these on a daily basis however. Most of our products are tonics and really work with the body by having them in our blood stream for an extended period of time. Some of our clients can feel our products right away but we always recommend people take our products at least once a day for at least two weeks.

Cordyceps and Manifest supports energy and stamina so it’s best suited to take before a workout or in the morning. It is also great at any time during the day when your feeling sluggish but need to keep cranking!

How many of these supplements can I take per day? Can I combine tinctures?

Here at the farm, we take our supplements all day everyday. And you may certainly combine them! Whatever makes sense for your desired state. This is almost entirely a matter of personal preference, but here are some combinations for inspiration:

  • Mush Zen and Mycelial Brain to decompress and achieve a more composed focus.
  • Cordyceps and Manifest for a supercharged day.
  • Reishi and Myco-Cleanse to detox after traveling or overindulging.
  • Bow Chicka Wow Wow & cordyceps for some creative and fiery energy.
  • Mycelial brain and lions mane for some brain juice.

Combining supplements can be a creative and personalized. Don’t hesitate to experiment! Of course you will want to be mindful about combining tinctures that could halt the end goal. For example if you are trying to get a restful sleep, combinations like Manifest and Mush Zen are advised to be avoided, but would work great to support a relaxed, but focused and driven workflow. Ultimately, use your discretion!

Do your mushrooms undergo heavy metal testing, mycotoxins and other lab testing?

Yes! Every batch we use goes through lab testing to show heavy metals, biological contamination, concentration of main medicinal compounds such as beta-glucan, alpha-glucan, ganoderic acid, cordycepin, and adenosine to name a few. We want to see the science when it comes to making claims about potency in our supplements, so we make sure to get definitive numbers. Our tests have shown to be some of the most potent on the market!

Are medicinal mushrooms safe to take during pregnancy or nursing? What about for my child?

Currently there is no research indicating that it’s harmful to ingest mushrooms while pregnant, nursing, or to give to children. Our tinctures include alcohol so that’s one consideration. We always recommend consulting your primary health practitioner.

Are medicinal mushrooms safe to give to my pet?

Mushrooms are generally regarded as safe and are often shared with our animal friends— although be sure to select a supplement in powder form and avoid giving your pet tincture due to the alcohol content.

What is the most optimal way to take medicinal mushroom products?

Taking our tinctures by dropping it under the tongue will give maximum potential to be absorbed into the bloodstream, but whatever way is comfortable for you will be effective. This may include putting onto the top of your tongue, into water, smoothies, hot tea, coffee, etc.

Which medicinal mushroom is right for me?

Excellent question! We encourage you to read about each of our blends to see if it matches your needs. When in doubt, our mush 10 is a good choice to get the benefits of all 10 mushrooms.
