The Health Benefits of Meshima Mushrooms

The Health Benefits of Meshima Mushrooms

Meshima (Phellinus linteus) is also known as song gen, sanghuang, and black hoof mushroom. It received the name ‘black hoof’ because sometimes Meshima resembles a horses’ hoof. It is a type of functional mushroom that is found growing on Mulberry Trees in black and brown varieties. Meshima has been used for centuries in ancient Chinese herbalism.

In the alternative health space Meshima is known to support the immune system and may support the immune system functioning at healthy levels.

Meshima is typically taken in combination with other functional mushrooms such as Maitake and Reishi. You can find Meshima, Maitake, & Reishi in our Daily 10 Tincture thats packed with seven other amazing mushrooms.   Like many other functional mushrooms, Meshima contains special carbohydrates called polysaccharides and beta-glucans. Meshima contains both ellagic acid and caffeic acid. Both of these are naturally occuring chemicals which are thought to have antioxidant effects.

When you decide to incorporate a Meshima mushroom supplement into your daily wellness ritual, please make sure that you do your research and only purchase organic mushroom extracts which are made from the entire fruiting body. In case you are wondering, the fruiting body of the mushroom looks like a mushroom.

The sad truth is that some manufacturers will just use mycellium on grain in order to make fast money. By doing this they are not waiting for the mushroom to grow; instead they will just grind up the mycellium on grains like rice. When manufacturers do this you are essentially just paying for filler and not receiving the beta-glucans and polysaccharides.

Meshima can be used in teas, coffee, soups, and smoothies. In some Asian cultures, specifically Chinese and Korean, Meshima was brewed into tea.
