Support Your Pup with the Best Medicinal Mushroom Supplements for Dogs
Most of us have or know of someone whose best friend isn’t human. And many of us go above and beyond to keep our furry friends as healthy and happy as possible! Ever wonder if there are alternative medicines for your pets? Great news! Pups and other pets can benefit from mushroom supplements too. Often overlapping with what supports humans, here are the best medicinal mushroom supplements for dogs and how to administer them.
Best Medicinal Mushroom Supplements for Dogs: Maitake, Reishi, Shiitake
Maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa)
Maitake is traditionally used by humans for regulating high blood pressure, blood sugar levels, hypertension, and cholesterol. Maitake supports the spleen, liver, and stomach, while also containing anti-cancer properties. For pets as well as humans, this mushroom is great for enhancing the immune system and its anti-inflammatory properties.
Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)
Reishi, commonly referred to as the “mushroom of immortality” in Chinese medicine, is highly anti-inflammatory. In general, reishi mushrooms are good to use with pets that are experiencing general weakness, such as dysfunctioning liver, heart or kidney systems. Reishi stimulates and supports immune system function, and can be used in protocol for chronic degenerative diseases. It’s one of the best medicinal mushroom supplements for dogs and humans alike!
Shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes)
This popular culinary mushroom also has powerful anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-candida properties. Shiitake assists in healthy liver function and is great for the skin. Shiitake contains phytochemicals known to support the immune system and cellular functions in pets and humans.
More of the Best Medicinal Mushroom Supplements for Dogs: Cordyceps and Turkey Tail
Cordyceps mushroom (Cordyceps militaris)
Cordyceps is a powerful adaptogenic mushroom used to increase energy and help your adrenal system adapt to stress. While boosting the body’s ATP (adenosine triphosphate production) and lung capacity, Cordyceps helps us get more oxygen into the bloodstream. A mushroom for asthma and energy in humans and dogs, Cordyceps also supports the liver and heart, and contains antifungal and antibacterial properties. It’s one of the best medicinal mushroom supplements for dogs with low energy or respiratory problems.
Turkey Tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor)
Studies have shown that compounds found in turkey tail are effective against fighting cancer cells, HIV and chronic fatigue, while also being great for the liver and immune system. A study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine tested the results of using a Turkey tail compound on 15 canine hemangiosarcoma (cancer of blood vessel walls) patients. The researchers found the turkey tail to effectively fight tumors and prolong the life span of these dogs!
How to Administer Mushroom Supplements to Your Dog
To give your dog these mushrooms, feel free to combine them, or try one at a time. Many of the best medicinal mushroom supplements for dogs support the immune system with overlapping properties, but one or two may stand out more than others.
One way to incorporate these mushrooms is to make a medicinal mushroom tea or decoction. This can be done by putting dried mushrooms (⅓ cup) in a pot of water (1 cup). Bring to a boil and let simmer for a couple of hours (cordyceps should only be simmered 15 minutes). Another option is to slice up the mushroom and fry them with meat and/or vegetables. You can also cook them in stew or soup, similar to the decoction.
According to holistic veterinarian Dr. Basko, you should “give your dog 1⁄2 ml per 5 lbs of body weight twice daily.” Adding powdered dried mushrooms to food, or using capsules also works as medicinal medicine for pets and humans. As these mushrooms are building and adaptogenic, they often take time to show their effectiveness, usually a span of 1-3 months.
Dried mushrooms and powders can be ordered online and sometimes found at markets or health food stores. Make sure to buy well-sourced and organic whenever you can. At Mushroom Revival we have homegrown organic Dried Cordyceps fruiting bodies for sale. Check it out!
